Types of Volunteers

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Make-A-Wish Montana. Our volunteer program is designed to give each volunteer a diverse and rewarding experience while working toward fulfilling our mission. Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

Volunteers help grant wishes in many ways and are matched to positions based on ability, interest and position availability. Please consider your skills, goals and motivation for volunteering when deciding which of these positions best suits your interests.  Every volunteer position, no matter how big or small, helps make a difference in a child's life.

To help ensure the safety and security of our wish children and their families, we carefully screen all potential volunteers. Applicants are required to take a mandatory training course. Prospective volunteers also must apply for and obtain a state criminal history background check and agree to abide by the policies and procedures of Make-A-Wish® Montana and its national organization, Make-A-Wish® America.

We are always in need of compassionate and enthusiastic individuals to step forward and volunteer their time and friendship to help make wishes come true. Below are five different opportunities for you to be a part of Make-A-Wish Montana.

Wish Granting Volunteers

As members of “wish teams,” volunteers are an important component of fulfilling wishes.  Working together, the “wish team” meets with the wish child’s family, acts as a liaison between Make-A-Wish staff and the family and aids in determining the most suitable wish for the child.  Wish Grantors must be 18 or older and must agree to work as part of a two- or three-person team.  Every wish-granting volunteer must complete a background check every three years.

Community Councils

The Community Councils are comprised of an elite group of leaders within each region who are enthusiastic about making an impact – not only in their own community but also in the life of a child. We are looking for the best and brightest individuals who want to share ideas and resources to impact the lives of Montana children diagnosed with a critical illness. As a council member, you will be able to assist with airport greeting, wish send-off/reveal parties, fundraising and more!

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors selects, evaluates and supports the president and chief executive officer of Make-A-Wish Montana. The board also protects the organization’s assets, enhances its public standing, ensures accountability, maintains legal integrity and assesses its own performance. Board members are actively engaged in fundraising and wish-granting.

Walk For Wishes

Walk For Wishes Montana is a fundraiser in both Missoula and Billings that celebrates the wishes in Montana that have already been granted, while raising funds for future wishes.  It’s a family-friendly event powered by wish families, volunteers, companies, donors and friends. By participating in a Make-A-Wish Montana walk in June, you can help bring the life-changing impact of a wish to children in Montana who are battling critical illnesses.

Wish Ambassadors

Wish Ambassadors are wish children, parents or siblings who were positively impacted by their wish experience. They are spokespeople for the chapter, helping to raise awareness and garner community support for our mission. Wishes are made possible only by telling the Make-A-Wish story, your story.
