Types of Volunteers

Volunteers help grant wishes in many ways and are matched to positions based on ability, interest, and position availability. Please consider your skills, goals, and motivation for volunteering when deciding which of these positions best suits your interests.  Every volunteer position, no matter how big or small, helps make a difference in a child's life.

To help ensure the safety and security of our wish children and their families, we carefully screen all potential volunteers. Applicants are invited to a one-on-one orientation followed by a mandatory training course. Prospective volunteers must also apply for and obtain a state criminal history background check and agree to abide by the policies and procedures of Make-A-Wish® Montana and its national organization, Make-A-Wish® America.

Wish Granting Volunteers

Make-A-Wish® Montana is always in need of compassionate and enthusiastic individuals to step forward and volunteer their time and friendship in order to assist with making wishes come true. As members of “wish teams,” volunteers are an important component of fulfilling wishes.  Working together, the “wish team” meets with the wish child’s family, acts as a liaison between Make-A-Wish staff and the family and aids in determining the most suitable wish for the child.

Wish-granting volunteers must be 21 years of age or older and must agree to work as part of a two or three-person team. New wish volunteers work with an existing wish team as a trainee for up to three wishes.

Airport Greeters

Volunteers assist in seeing wish families off at the airport at the start of their wish trips.

Office Volunteers

Volunteers can help in the Make-A-Wish Montana Missoula office with mailings, phone calls, filing and other office support.

Ambassadors and Fundraising Volunteers

Ambassadors
An ambassador speaks with local community groups to let them know about the Make-A-Wish's mission and how they can help make wishes come true. They educate groups on how they can share the power of a wish® by referring kids they know who may qualify for a wish and by holding a fundraiser for Make-A-Wish.

Event and Fundraising Volunteers
Volunteers also help at special events such as golf tournaments, haunted houses and dances. Fund raising volunteers work with the Make-A-Wish® Development staff to implement fund-raising programs at schools and workplaces by introducing the "Wishmakers At Work®" and "Kids For Wish Kids®" programs to people in their local communities.

Macy's Ambassadors

The ambassador program, now going into its third year, is designed to make a more stable connection between store, community and organization. As an ambassador, you will act as a liaison between your local store and our offices. Having the store managers working with someone from the community makes a larger impact and produces stronger out-comes when it comes time for the winter campaigns. As a Macy’s ambassador, you will have responsibilities such as speaking engagements, letter pick-ups and frequent visits with the store’s manager and associates. If you are interested in this unique opportunity, please contact your local Make-A-Wish office.
